Teaching emergence and evolution simultaneously through simulated breeding of artificial swarm behaviors

چکیده

We developed a simple interactive simulation tool that applies the simulated breeding method to evolve populations of Reynolds’ Boids system. A user manually evolves swarm behaviors of artificial agents by repeatedly selecting his/her preferred behavior as a parent of the next generation. We used this tool as part of teaching materials of the course “Mathematical Modeling and Simulation” offered to engineering-major junior students in the Department of Human Communication at the University of ElectroCommunications, Japan, during the Spring semester 2005. Students actively engaged in the simulated breeding processes in the classes and voluntarily evolved a rich variety of swarm behaviors that were not initially anticipated.

Evolution of Coordinated Motion Behaviors in a Group of Self-Assembled Robots

In this work, we introduce a swarm robotic system, called a swarm-bot. A swarm-bot is a self-assembling and self-organizing artifact composed of a swarm of s-bots, mobile robots with the ability to connect to/disconnect from each other. In particular, we address the problem of synthesizing controllers for the swarm-bot using Artificial Evolution. We describe the motivation behind the choice of ...

Artificial Art Made by Artificial Ants

We present how we have considered the artificial ant paradigm as a tool for the generation of music and painting. From an aesthetic perspective, we are interested in demonstrating that swarm intelligence and self organization can lead to spatio-temporal structures that can reach an artistic dimension. In our case, the use of artificial pheromones can lead to the creation of melodies thanks to a...

Evolution of animats following a moving target in an artificial ecosystem

Many biological animals, even microscopically small, are able to track moving sources of food. In this paper, we investigate the emergence of such behavior in artificial animals (animats) in a 2-dimensional simulated liquid environment. These “predators” are controlled by evolving artificial gene regulatory networks encoded in linear genomes. The fate of the predators is determined only by thei...

An Individual-Based Evolving Predator-Prey Ecosystem Simulation Using a Fuzzy Cognitive Map as the Behavior Model

We present an individual-based predator-prey model with, for the first time, each agent behavior being modeled by a fuzzy cognitive map (FCM), allowing the evolution of the agent behavior through the epochs of the simulation. The FCM enables the agent to evaluate its environment (e.g., distance to predator or prey, distance to potential breeding partner, distance to food, energy level) and its ...
